1880 Merryweather Wheelbarrow Pump

The British firm Merryweather built this small manual pump on a chassis resembling a wheelbarrow. This allowed for easy transport to a fire at a factory, estate grounds, or a workshop. Two persons could rapidly move it to the scene and place it into action; although, four people were preferred.
As late as the 1920’s, these style pumps were still being produced. And, during bombing of London in World War II, many of these pumps were used to great affect, especially to supplement motorized fire apparatus.
When you come by The Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting, you will see this and many other amazing pieces related to the fire service.
