1866 Hunneman Hand-Drawn Pumper and Hose Cart

This beautiful pumper carries its suction hose “Squirrel Tail” style on a graceful crane neck frame. With a pre-connected suction hose, it can be put into service immediately. The design of curved handles allows firefighters to pump closer to the ground. Capacity for this rig is approximately 130 gallons per minute. The attached hose cart, called a “Jumper,” provided several hundred feet of hose.

The “Pacific,” and an identical rig called the “Atlantic,” were purchased in 1866 and used by the nearby towns of Rockport and Camden, Maine. Since Rockport was four miles west of Camden, its pumper was named the “Pacific.” The motto “Be Early and Cool” is still used today by Rockport.
